Get to know the “brand” asset class

marca propriedade intelectual cpdma

Continuing with our series of posts explaining the differences between the classes of intellectual assets, today we're going to talk about BRAND.

A trademark is a sign used to distinguish and identify a product or service. It is registered with the National Institute of Industrial Property, INPI, guaranteeing the holder exclusivity of use throughout the national territory for the market segment for which it was requested and in the manner in which it was requested.

The search for prior art and viability is essential in order to have an idea of the existence of prior trademarks that may be an impediment to the intended registration.

The registration is valid for 10 years, renewable for equal and successive periods.

A good example is the Coca-Cola trademark, registered under No. 005023998 in class 32, with specifications for beverages.
